At W H Kirkwood Ltd, we do more than construct buildings – we build long-term relationships founded on trust, performance and quality that stands the test of time.
The company was established by William H. Kirkwood in Greenock. In its earliest days, the firm focused on specialized stonemasonry and brickwork, contributing to the traditional sandstone architecture that defines much of Inverclyde.
By the mid-1920s, the firm had expanded its capabilities to include joinery and slating. In 1926, it officially became a Limited Company, moving into larger public works and the growing housebuilding sector.
Ian Macnaughton, who had joined the management team in the late 1970s, took full ownership of the company. Under his leadership, the firm modernized its workforce and diversified into complex conservation and civil engineering sectors.
The company celebrated 100 years of continuous operation in Greenock. At this stage, they were firmly established as a "heritage" contractor, often trusted with the town's most sensitive historic buildings.
Robert Macnaughton took over as Managing Director. Since then, the company has reportedly tripled its annual turnover and expanded its reach across West and Central Scotland while maintaining its headquarters at Lyle Street in Greenock.
In September 2025, Chief Executive Ian Macnaughton was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Inverclyde Chamber of Commerce ICON Awards. This recognized his decades of service and the company's role in major redevelopments like the Greenock Custom House and the Greenock Municipal Buildings.
