Overview

We were appointed as Main Contractor for the delivery of a new-build control room facility and the replacement of two existing cremators at Greenock Crematorium. The project involved the construction of a new standalone structure to the rear of the existing building, alongside extensive internal alterations, all undertaken within a sensitive, operational crematorium environment. Our responsibilities included full site management, health and safety compliance, coordination of specialist trades, and close liaison with the client and design team to ensure uninterrupted service provision where possible.

A key element of the project was the construction of a new-build control room and operational workspace, designed to house the new cremator plant and associated controls. The new building incorporated new foundations, floor slab construction, structural elements, external envelope, and internal fit-out, providing a modern, purpose-built facility that significantly improved operational efficiency and compliance. The new floor slab was engineered to accommodate the installation and long-term operation of the new cremators and associated equipment.

Internally, the works extended into the existing crematorium where we undertook substantial structural alterations, including breaking out the existing concrete floor and casting new reinforced concrete floor panels to interface with the new-build structure. New and enlarged structural openings were formed in the rear wall of the crematorium to create direct, functional connections between the existing building, the new-build control room, the Charge Area, and the Chapel receiving area. These works were carefully managed to protect the integrity of the listed structure.

The new-build works also delivered modern staff accommodation, including new offices, control areas, storage rooms, staff welfare facilities, and toilet accommodation. These spaces were designed and constructed to provide a safe, efficient, and compliant working environment for crematorium staff, significantly enhancing both staff wellbeing and operational workflows compared to the previous arrangements.

In parallel, we managed the removal and replacement of the existing catafalque and delivered full mechanical and electrical upgrades, including new services installations integrated into both the new-build and existing structures. All works were coordinated to ensure seamless commissioning and handover of the new facilities.

This project highlights our experience as Main Contractor in delivering new-build construction alongside complex alterations within live, sensitive environments, demonstrating our ability to manage technically demanding works while maintaining operational continuity, quality, and safety throughout.
