Overview

Argyll College, Dunoon, is one of University of Highlands and Islands’ 10 learning centres providing further and higher education.

An integral part of the community going beyond offering education and learning opportunities, Argyll College also opens its doors to the community for private hire use of meeting rooms and video conference facilities, alongside running training courses for local businesses.

Results of a comprehensive roof condition survey revealed that urgent attention was required to renew the existing slate roof, repairing the damage caused by water ingress.

Project delivery

From the outset completing this project within an immovable 6-week timeframe was critical to the Client, ensuring all works were successfully delivered prior to the Christmas shutdown. Parallel to this was working around this small but very busy College building, keeping all dust, noise, construction traffic and general disruption to a minimum as works would be carried out directly over the classrooms and office.

Taking consideration of ‘peak’ activity times, our Team developed a detailed Programme which coordinated the works around the College’s week to week requirements. Adopting this method we were able to take advantage of opportunities to drive the most disruptive works forward at appropriate times.

Having successfully replaced the defective slates, taking care to work around existing solar panels, further associated works included replacement of the cast-iron rainwater goods system, render repairs, repairs and painting of the timber posts and windows.

We were delighted to deliver this project on time, with excellent feedback from the in-situ staff.

‘This was the first time I have worked with W H Kirkwood and I was impressed with their overall attitude and professionalism both on and off site.’
Paul Ross, Project Administrator
