Overview
In December 2014 we were appointed Main Contractor for the refurbishment of the Grade A listed ‘Wemyss Bay Pier’ and associated buildings.
In line with the Client’s request we assembled our team who drove the project planning processes forward to meet the early mobilisation date, starting on site early January 2015.
Our proposed methods of work have been endorsed by Historic Scotland to restore this important facility.
Having withstood years of underinvestment and weather damage our remit was to replicate and recreate the history of the Grade A Listed Pier Buildings by replicating the carpentry and joinery work of the terminal and buildings which include the walkway, historic ticket office and public waiting rooms.
Structural work to the steel frame and replacement of corroded and defective steelwork was necessary in the restoration. Overhaul of roofs replacing the glazed features and repair/replace slate coverings and flat roof coverings together with replacement of cast iron rainwater systems.
Many timber features, internally and externally, had rotted and were generally in a poor state of repair. These features, inclusive of timber framed windows, were reinstated on a like-for-like basis by our in-house joinery team.
Adding Value
We strive to add value to the project through collaborative engagement with our subcontractors and suppliers to deliver the project without adversely impacting on the programme or costs.
The true condition of the building fabrics, effects of rot and weather damage and level of repair/replacement necessary was largely unknown at the beginning of the contract. Through our investigation and reporting procedures we have been able to identify issues, suggesting solutions and efficiencies in a proactive manner to CMAL to ensure the best outcome for the project goals.
Our Site Waste Management Plan and associated procedures accounted for recovery of a large amount of timber for recycling/reclamation.
